Tele-a-Medic

Telemedicine has become a popular digital tool for providing the necessary care to patients while keeping them and doctors safe.  Furthermore, telehealth platforms are real time-savers for both patients and doctors, as they allow both groups of stakeholders to access and provide medical services respectively at their own convenience

Scope // Human Factors and Ergonomics

Role in Team // Concept, Research, Design

Duration // One Semester

Tools // Adobe Illustrator, Adobe XD, Google Forms

CONTEXT

BACKGROUND // Telemedicine has become a popular digital tool for providing the necessary care to patients while keeping them and doctors safe.  Furthermore, telehealth platforms are real time-savers for both patients and doctors, as they allow both groups of stakeholders to access and provide medical services respectively at their own convenience, while also ensuring quality patient-doctor interactions and accelerating related administrative services such as collecting data on a patient’s condition prior to the initial patient intake, sharing medical forms, maintaining visit records, issuing prescriptions, other related documentation as well as executing payments, placing insurance claims, etc

PROJECT GOALS // The primary objective of Tele-a-medic is to create a platform that allows patients to access healthcare from the comfort of their homes while providing doctors with the tools and information they need to manage their patients' health remotely. The project aimed to:

  • Design an integrated telehealth system that allows patients to access healthcare in real-time from anywhere in the world.

  • Focus on the ease of use and intuitive interface, making the process of join meetings, scheduling appointments, and using other features as seamless as possible.

  • Improve and enhance access to healthcare by reducing physical barriers and time needed to reach the healthcare provider.

  • To provide an efficient method to manage healthcare providers and medical records.

  • Ensure patient privacy and safety of user data.

METHODOLOGY

Brainstorming was used to develop ideas and curate ideas as a team. The research focused on the existing existing platforms and what needs to be done to enhance the user experience. Through the use of interviews, the team came up with several pain points, suggestions, and ideas to improve the product, such as patients waiting in the waiting room not knowing how long to wait, family members not being able to speak to the doctor, and questionnaire reminders.

IDEATION

The Tele-a-medic prototype was developed using the iterative design process, where feedback was solicited from different stakeholders, and changes were made promptly based on the feedback. During the prototyping phase, five primary functions were outlined, including signup/login, scheduling appointments, pre-screening, sending invitations, and joining meetings.

For each function, specific design elements were incorporated to ensure consistency, simplicity, and guide the user to complete tasks efficiently. Input boxes and buttons were included for collecting data, a 3D model for body pain areas was integrated, and a video call feature for patients and doctors was included, which allowed for the viewing of patient records, e-Prescribing, and referral for specialist and testing.

EVALUATION

The evaluation process for Tele-a-medic involved usability testing to identify design problems, improve the platform, gather user preferences, and measure satisfaction. The testing included both qualitative and quantitative methods, with participants completing tasks as both doctors and patients. The survey focused on measuring ease of use, intuitiveness, understanding of contents, navigation, and satisfaction with the application. Results highlighted issues with features not working, difficulty in joining online sessions, scheduling appointments not standing out, lack of a printing feature, and accessibility concerns for color blindness. Benefits of usability testing include identifying improvements and catching errors, while limitations include bias and varying levels of user experience and knowledge of technology.

CONCLUSION

Tele-a-medic is a cutting-edge telehealth care app that offers patients on-demand access to medical care from the comfort of their home. The app is designed to be intuitive, user-friendly, and efficient, with streamlined steps to guide users through the process of scheduling appointments, sharing medical information, communicating with healthcare providers, and payment options. Tele-a-medic's design elements and principles make it an essential tool for healthcare practitioners and patients alike.
